56 Million Litres of Sewage Dumped Into Welsh River: A Growing Concern

Campaigners from the Cleddau Project have revealed that Welsh Water dumped nearly 56 million litres of sewage into the Western Cleddau River in Pembrokeshire in 2023, equating to 17 tankers a day. Issues at the Picton pumping station have been attributed to the spillage, with pumps operating at only 80% capacity for 18 months. Analysis indicated high levels of ammonia and troubling E. coli counts in the water, prompting concerns about local wildlife and recreational safety. Welsh Water has acknowledged the lapses and is upgrading its facilities amidst increasing scrutiny and regulatory pressure.
