Progress in Germany’s Search for Nuclear Waste Repository

Germany’s search for a suitable nuclear waste repository has taken a significant step forward, with the Federal Company for Final Disposal (BGE) narrowing potential sites from 54% to 44% of the country’s land area. As of now, 18% of identified areas are deemed unsuitable for storage. While a definitive selection of site regions will occur by 2027, the Bundestag will make the final decision on exploration areas. The aim is to find a safe underground site for 27,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste, which remains hazardous for up to one million years.
