Two Correctional Officers Acquitted of Charges in Thessaloniki

Two correctional officers in Thessaloniki were acquitted by the Second Instance Criminal Court on charges of smuggling and distributing mobile phones to inmates. The court accepted the prosecutor’s proposal, citing doubts over the credibility of the allegations. The case arose from complaints made in 2020 by inmates, who reported a ‘rate’ of around 1000 euros for acquiring a phone. The officers had previously been sentenced to lengthy prison terms but were released on conditional parole after four months.
