German Retailers Hope for Strong Christmas Sales Despite Economic Challenges
German retailers are cautiously optimistic about this year’s Christmas season, forecasting average spending of €297 per person on gifts, slightly up from last year. The Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE) estimates a total industry revenue of €121.4 billion for November and December. While over half of consumers plan to spend the same as last year, economic uncertainties—including inflation and geopolitical tensions—are leading many to reconsider their budgets. HDE President Alexander von Preen highlighted the psychological impact of current events on consumer behavior, as a significant portion of retailers expect disappointing sales.
