Although classified documents were not compromised, several workstations within the department were infiltrated. The attack was conducted via an external security provider, BeyondTrust, who has cooperated with security agencies to assess the incident’s scope. The Treasury warned of ‘serious IT security incident’ due to an actor linked to the Chinese state, responsible for advanced persistent threats. This follows previous accusations against China for various cyberattacks on governmental facilities.
