Devastating Floods Disrupt Cemeteries in Spain, Complicating Burials

Following catastrophic flooding in eastern Spain, the aftermath has left cemeteries in ruins, complicating dignified burials for victims. In Catarroja, employees and volunteers are struggling to clean up water-logged graveyards, where many graves have been damaged and corpses remain unburied. The floods, described as the worst in a generation, have claimed 219 lives and left numerous individuals missing. As local authorities assist grieving families, cremation or burial options in regional capitals are being considered, even as families face challenges relating to traditional burial practices.
