Dramatic Decline in Social Lawyers Leaves Many Without Legal Aid in Netherlands
Between 2019 and 2023, the number of social lawyers in the Netherlands assisting with benefits and welfare cases has plummeted by over 55%, from 1,834 to 826. This trend reflects a broader drop across various fields, including housing and labor law. The decline makes it increasingly challenging for low-income individuals to access necessary legal assistance, raising concerns from the Dutch Bar Association. Issues such as low fees and growing workloads are contributing factors. In response, the Legal Loket has seen a rise in inquiries, indicating that many are struggling to secure timely support.
