Italian Court Suspends Detention of Migrants in Albania Amid Legal Uncertainty
The immigration section of the civil court in Rome has temporarily halted the validation of detentions for seven migrants, originally from Egypt and Bangladesh, transferred to an Albanian center. Citing a new government decree on ‘safe countries’, judges are seeking clarification from the European Court of Justice. With the suspension of the court’s decision, the migrants may soon be returned to Italy. Additionally, an eighth vulnerable asylum seeker has already been ordered to return. This follows previous non-validation of detentions by the court, challenged by the Italian government.
