Peru Opens South America’s First China-Controlled Mega Port
Peru has inaugurated the Chancay mega port, the first in South America to be fully operated by China’s state-owned COSCO. Attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, the $3.5 billion project aims to enhance trade between China and Latin America. The port, capable of handling one million containers annually, significantly reduces shipping times to China. However, the establishment has faced criticism regarding China’s control and intentions in the region, raising concerns about geopolitical implications and resource exploitation amid increasing trade between China and Latin American countries.
