Abkhazia President Defies Calls to Resign Amid Protests Over Economic Deal with Russia
President Bzjania of Abkhazia has vowed to stay in office despite significant protests that escalated into storming the parliament. Demonstrators in the capital, Sukhum, are demanding his resignation following his approval of a controversial economic agreement with Russia. The treaty is feared to inflate real estate prices as wealthy Russians may invest heavily. While Bzjania stated he remains committed to discussions with opposition leaders, those leaders have denied any negotiations. As the unrest continues, at least nine people were reported injured during the protests.
