A Pioneering Act of Resistance in WWII: Corfu’s Students Stand United

In November 1941, shortly after a procession honoring the island’s deliverance from the plague by Saint Spyridon, students in Corfu staged the first resistance gathering in Europe against occupying forces during the Italian Occupation. Concealing Greek flags in their uniforms, they marched together, singing ‘Kerkyra,’ drawing enthusiastic support from bystanders. This spontaneous event was met with fierce repression by the Italian police, resulting in many arrests. Each year, the Philharmonic of Korakiana and local students revive this historical act of defiance, highlighting the enduring legacy of unity and resistance against fascism.
