Adriaan van Dis has won the NS Publieksprijs for his novel ‘Naar zachtheid en een warm omhelzen,’ securing 21% of nearly 100,000 votes, according to CPNB. In his autobiographical work, Van Dis recounts a summer spent with his grandparent and housekeeper Ommie, who provides the love he lacks at home due to his father’s wartime trauma. Along with a €7,500 cash prize and a sculpture by Jeroen Henneman, his book will be promoted on NS train displays. This marks Van Dis’s second win, having previously claimed the award in 1995.
