Amazon Deforestation Hits Nine-Year Low Thanks to Stricter Controls
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has reached its lowest level in nine years, with 6,288 square kilometers lost between August 2023 and July 2024, a significant decrease from over 9,000 square kilometers the previous year. Brazilian officials attribute this positive trend to improved monitoring efforts initiated by President Lula da Silva, who aims to halt deforestation entirely by 2030. Additionally, deforestation has also decreased in the Cerrado region by 25.7%. Environmental Minister Marina Silva emphasizes the importance of protecting the Amazon in combating climate change.
