Archaeological Treasures Unearthed in Utrecht’s Neude During Renovations
During renovation work at Neude in Utrecht, significant archaeological finds dating back to the 14th century have emerged, including pilgrim badges, a ring, a brooch, and a bone toothbrush. Archaeologist Jesse Braiek noted the rarity of discovering such numerous artifacts from the same period in a small area. The finds were located within layers of sand, peat, clay, and refuse, suggesting medieval efforts to raise the swampy ground for habitation. The objects are currently being cleaned and studied before being handed over to the municipality of Utrecht, but they may delay ongoing heating network upgrades.
