Austria Faces Russian Gas Supply Cut Amid Legal Dispute with Gazprom
Russia has halted gas supplies to Austria following a legal dispute that led to an international arbitration court ordering Gazprom to pay OMV €230 million. The cessation, announced with just over 12 hours’ notice, has raised concerns, but Chancellor Karl Nehammer assured the public that Austria is well-prepared with alternative gas sources. The country’s gas storage facilities are nearly full, ensuring sufficient supply for the winter. This halt underscores Austria’s transition away from dependency on Russian gas, which comprised 82% of its imports as recently as August.
