Azerbaijan’s role as the host of the UN Climate Conference has sparked criticism due to its heavy reliance on oil and gas, which constitutes 90% of its export economy. Prominent scientists and environmental politicians are urging the UN to reform its selection process for host countries, highlighting concerns over climate credibility. In an open letter to UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell, they advocate for stricter admission criteria to exclude nations failing to support the agreed transition away from fossil fuels. The letter notes the alarming potential for global warming to exceed 2.9 degrees Celsius by 2100.
