Breakthrough Drug Reduces Appetite and Boosts Calorie Burn, Researchers Say
Scientists at the University of Copenhagen have developed a new drug that effectively reduces appetite and increases calorie burn without inducing nausea. Initial tests revealed that the drug activates neurokinin-2 receptors (NK2R), enhancing metabolic functions vital for energy balance and blood sugar control. In studies involving diabetic and obese primates, NK2R activation significantly decreased body weight, blood glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels while improving insulin sensitivity. The research, published in ‘Nature,’ indicates this could be a significant advancement in treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity, with clinical trials planned for next year.
