Celebrating Democracy: A 50-Year Reflection in Sparta
On November 16, 2024, the Society of Spartan Studies will host a commemorative event marking 50 years since the restoration of democracy in Greece. Taking place at the Cultural Center of Sparta, the evening will feature an open discussion on the country’s present and future, rather than traditional academic presentations. Notable speakers include historian Télis Týmbas and journalist Dimitris Papachristos, who was a key voice during the Polytechnic uprising of 1973. A children’s history workshop on the Polytechnic events will also be held earlier that day, led by educator Pavlos Antonopoulos.
