Challenges Arise as Wisent Population Grows in Solothurn Thal
The Wisent Thal project in Solothurn has successfully increased its wisent population from five to ten over two years, raising concerns about inbreeding and natural hierarchy conflicts. Project leader Otto Holzgang indicated that to prevent inbreeding and genetic degeneration, some animals may need to be culled, including a young bull expected to reach breeding age soon. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding the project, including opposition from local farmers, Holzgang aims to ensure the herd’s health and viability while exploring relocation options for the young bull before it faces removal.
