Completion of Crete-Attica Electrical Interconnection Marks Major Milestone for Greece’s Power Grid
The recent completion of the Crete-Attica electrical interconnection is set to enhance Greece’s national power system, expected to begin operations in spring 2025. This project, with a budget exceeding €1.1 billion, aims to reduce energy costs, lower emissions, and support renewable energy deployment. The interconnection will also terminate fossil fuel-based power generation on Crete, potentially saving consumers €300 million annually and preventing the emission of 500,000 tons of CO2 each year. It is one of the most complex electricity transmission projects in Greece.
