Discovery of World’s Largest Coral in the Pacific Raises Climate Change Awareness
Scientists have discovered the largest coral ever recorded in the southwest Pacific Ocean, measuring 34 meters wide and estimated to be over 300 years old. Found by videographer Manu San Felix while documenting areas affected by climate change, this unique coral was described as a ‘cathedral underwater.’ It thrives in deeper waters, potentially shielding it from rising ocean temperatures. Announced alongside the UN climate talks COP29, the finding highlights the importance of coral ecosystems for local economies and the urgent need for climate action, particularly for vulnerable nations like the Solomon Islands.
