First-Time Declassification of Cyprus Crisis Documents by Greek Intelligence Agency
For the first time, Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) has declassified archival documents relating to the 1974 coup against Archbishop Makarios and the subsequent Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Released to mark the 50th anniversary of these events, the EYP published 58 reports documenting the developments between July and August 1974. According to EYP Chief Themistocles Demiris, this declassification allows for national reflection and insights into that critical period, emphasizing that information is drawn from external sources rather than the service’s own actions.
