France Proposes New Youth Justice Bill Post-Summer Riots

In response to the summer 2023 riots triggered by the police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel in Nanterre, ex-Prime Minister Gabriel Attal introduced a new bill aimed at enhancing youth justice. Scheduled for discussion in the National Assembly on December 2, the proposed legislation seeks to impose greater accountability on parents of young offenders and establish immediate court appearances for minors. Notably, it also aims to limit leniency in sentencing for repeat offenders aged 16 and older, specifically for severe crimes.
