Greece’s Continued Battle Against Wildfires Amid Climate Challenges

At the Green Deal 2024 conference, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, detailed ongoing wildfires and the government’s efforts to combat them. With 9,000 fire incidents recorded this season, he assessed it as the toughest in decades, linking climate change to future migration pressures. Kikilias also updated on the AIGIS program, revealing €1.8 billion worth of contracts to enhance firefighting infrastructure, including meteorological stations. Meanwhile, forest management reforms under the ANTINERO program aim to correct past deficiencies, focusing on prevention and resilience against extreme weather events.
