Increase in Attacks on Journalists in the Netherlands Amid Pro-Palestinian Protests
In 2024, incidents of violence and intimidation against journalists in the Netherlands have significantly increased, with reports surging to 249 compared to 218 in 2023. The rise is attributed mainly to aggressive encounters during pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Amsterdam, where assaults against journalists rose from 29 to 56 incidents. Among reported incidents, threats were noted 99 times, while discrimination and physical violence also rose sharply. The organization PersVeilig is working alongside journalist unions and police to enhance protections for reporters.
