Increase in Food Safety Enforcement Actions by Ireland’s Food Safety Authority in 2024

In 2024, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued 115 closure orders, marking a 39-order increase from 2023. Alongside this, 16 Prohibition Orders and two Improvement Orders were issued due to serious breaches of food safety legislation. Recurring issues such as inadequate pest control, poor cleaning practices, and insufficient staff training were noted. Dr. Pamela Byrne, FSAI Chief Executive, called the rise in Enforcement Orders ‘unacceptable’, emphasizing the importance of consumer safety and rigorous food safety practices in all businesses.
