Japanese Students Embrace Pontic Culture Through Dance and Music

In Kyoto, Japan, Babes Kyrmanidis, a dance instructor, shares the rich traditions of Pontic culture with enthusiastic local students. After his initial visit in 2022, Kyrmanidis returned to teach young Japanese learners about the intricate dances and the lyre, fostering a unique cultural exchange. With around 25 dedicated students, they meet several times a year to explore this heritage, despite challenges posed by distance and cost. As Japan grapples with its cultural identity, these efforts may inspire a new appreciation for diverse traditions amidst a landscape dominated by contemporary pop culture.
