Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips undertook undercover visits to evaluate the effectiveness of the ‘Ask for Angela’ safety initiative, revealing significant shortcomings in its implementation at participating venues. Following a BBC investigation, which found over half of the tested locations were unaware of the emergency code, Phillips stressed the importance of proper training for staff. The scheme, established in 2016 to help individuals discreetly signal for assistance, has been criticized for lacking effective communication and training, leading to calls for reform in safety measures across the UK.
