Kickoff of the 2024 Vendée Globe: A Pioneering Solo Sailing Challenge Begins
The 2024 Vendée Globe officially commenced on Sunday, November 10, at 13:02, with 40 skippers departing from Les Sables-d’Olonne in front of a captivated crowd. This 10th edition of the solo round-the-world sailing race, often dubbed the ‘Everest of the seas,’ involves a daunting journey of 24,300 nautical miles (approximately 45,000 km) without stops or assistance. Favorable weather at the start is expected to give way to lighter winds, potentially slowing the fleet for the initial days. Among the participants is Charlie Dalin, one of the favorites, along with a record six women, including 23-year-old Violette Dorange.
