London’s Tube Heat to Warm Historic Landmarks in Eco-Friendly Project
A new initiative set to launch in 2026 aims to harness excess heat from London’s Underground to power iconic landmarks such as the Parliament and Downing Street. The South Westminster Area Network (SWAN) will utilize surplus heat from the metro, sewers, and the River Thames to provide low-carbon energy to hundreds of historic buildings. This project is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons annually and is expected to create 500 jobs, with significant investments of around £1 billion planned through 2050. The initiative underscores the UK’s commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
