Massive European Art Forgery Network Exposed by Italian Police
Italian authorities have uncovered a large-scale European forgery ring that sold counterfeit artworks attributed to renowned artists like Banksy, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. Investigations involved around 38 suspects across Italy, Spain, France, and Belgium, focusing on conspiracy, trafficking in stolen goods, and forgery. More than 2,100 fake artworks valued at approximately €200 million were seized across six counterfeit workshops, with connections to known forgers of prominent artists’ works. The inquiry began in 2023, highlighting the challenges of art fraud in the contemporary market.
