Myanmar Military Junta Grants Amnesty to Over 5,800 Prisoners on Independence Day
On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day from Britain, Myanmar’s military junta has granted amnesty to more than 5,800 prisoners, including around 600 political detainees. However, Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted Nobel laureate who remains imprisoned, was not among those released. The junta also reduced the sentences of 144 individuals serving life sentences. Among the amnestied were 180 foreign nationals, many of whom were detained for gambling or fishing violations in Myanmar’s waters. The country has faced ongoing chaos and violence since the military coup in 2021.
