Myanmar Releases Thousands of Prisoners for Independence Day Amid Ongoing Political Strife

As Myanmar prepares to celebrate its Independence Day on January 4, military chief Min Aung Hlaing announced the release of 58,000 prisoners, including 600 political detainees who opposed the military coup three years ago. Notably absent from the release is Aung San Suu Kyi, the 79-year-old Nobel laureate serving a 27-year sentence. The military junta has faced widespread condemnation and is engaged in ongoing conflicts against various insurgent groups, while the international community raises concerns about human rights violations.
