NASA’s Parker Solar Probe Set for Historic Solar Encounter
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is poised to make a record-setting approach to the Sun on December 24, 2023, coming within 6.2 million kilometers of the solar surface. Launched in August 2018, the mission aims to advance scientific understanding of solar phenomena, including solar storms that affect Earth’s communications. As the probe approaches, it will reach speeds of approximately 690,000 km/h, with its thermal shield enduring extreme temperatures up to 930°C while keeping internal instruments at a comfortable 29°C.
