New Mpox Variant Cases Confirmed in the UK Amid Rising Risks
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the first local transmissions of the new Mpox variant in the UK, linked to a household member who recently traveled to several African countries. These are the first cases recorded outside Africa since August 2024. Although the overall risk to the UK population remains low, WHO officials are urging health authorities to enhance surveillance and contact tracing measures. The two individuals are currently being treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, with previous cases reported in Germany, Sweden, and parts of Asia.
