New Tobacco and Vapes Bill Targets Outdoor Smoking in England
The UK government is advancing its Tobacco and Vapes Bill, aimed at creating a smoke-free generation by extending the indoor smoking ban to select outdoor areas, including children’s playgrounds and spaces outside schools and hospitals. Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced plans for a consultation on the proposal, although smoking will still be permitted in pub gardens. The legislation will also require retailers in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland to obtain licenses to sell tobacco and nicotine products. Health charities have praised the initiative, which follows the demise of similar proposals by the previous administration.
