NHS Introduces Enhanced Stop Smoking Pill to Combat Cigarette Addiction
The NHS is launching an improved version of varenicline, a prescription-only stop smoking pill, to aid smokers in quitting. Varenicline, previously withdrawn due to safety concerns, is now deemed safe and is expected to help over 85,000 smokers annually. It has proven more effective than nicotine patches and works by diminishing cravings. Alongside behavioral support, it may significantly reduce smoking-related deaths. E-cigarettes will also be offered in some areas, though not as a primary treatment. Health officials emphasize the need for comprehensive support services for smokers.
