Nigerien Imam to Be Released Amid Controversial Terrorism Charges

Abdourahmane Ridouane, a 59-year-old imam from a mosque in Pessac, France, will be released from administrative detention on November 6. He faces charges of ‘apologie du terrorisme’ for allegedly endorsing acts of terrorism and Islamophobia against the French state. Ridouane was arrested in August and had his appeals against expulsion dismissed by Paris administrative courts. His trial is scheduled for January 13, 2024, during which he remains under judicial control, prohibited from leaving France and required to report weekly to police. The case raises issues of freedom of speech and governmental response to perceived extremism.
