Pompeii Installs Daily Visitor Cap to Combat Mass Tourism
In a bid to manage mass tourism, Pompeii will limit daily visitors to 20,000 starting November 15. Entry tickets will now be personalized and issued with specific time slots to better protect the archaeological site, which was buried in volcanic ash in 79 AD. Last tourist season, Pompeii welcomed a record 4 million visitors, with peak days seeing over 36,000 tourists. The director of the archaeological park emphasized the aim of promoting sustainable tourism at this UNESCO site, joining other Italian cities like Venice in tackling the challenges posed by overwhelming tourist numbers.
