Pro-Russian Candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo Leads in Moldova’s Presidential Elections
In Moldova’s tightly contested presidential election, pro-Russian candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo has edged ahead with 51.2% of the votes counted. However, the results are pending as over 300,000 votes from Moldovans abroad are yet to be tallied, a group traditionally supportive of incumbent President Maia Sandu, who advocates for EU membership. The election has been marred by allegations of corruption and foreign interference, with claims that criminal groups attempted to sway votes in favor of Stoianoglo. Additionally, the elections coincided with a referendum to solidify Moldova’s pro-European stance in its constitution.
