Protests Erupt at Abkhaz Parliament Over Russian Investment Agreement
Demonstrators have occupied the parliament building in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia, protesting an investment deal with Moscow that would allow Russian citizens to easily purchase property. Local President Aslan Bzhania announced his intention to resign and call for early elections once the building is vacated. Protesters accuse Bzhania of exploiting ties with Russia for personal gain. Moscow is watching the situation closely and has advised its citizens to avoid travel to Abkhazia, which declared independence after conflicts with Georgia.
