Qatar Threatens to Halt LNG Supply to EU Over New Regulatory Law

Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi has announced that the country will stop supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union if significant penalties are imposed due to the EU’s new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. This law mandates companies to address issues like exploitation and environmental harm, with fines reaching up to 5% of global annual revenue. Al-Kaabi argues that the current demands of the law are unfeasible for a large company like QatarEnergy, which he leads, and he is open to discussing a cap on penalties based solely on European revenues.
