Reviving the Ancient Tradition of ‘Bampou’ in Serres, Greece

The ancient custom of ‘Bampou’ or ‘Vrexoudia’ is being revived today in various areas of the Serres regional unit. Traditionally celebrated by married women dressed in traditional costumes, the event honors the historical midwife, Bampou, through gift giving and local festivities. Women express gratitude for past childbirth assistance, offering gifts like towels, soap, and sweets while showing hospitality. This celebration is dedicated solely to women, with men remaining home to manage children and household chores. The tradition reflects deep cultural roots brought by refugees from Eastern Thrace.
