Shell Wins Court Battle Over CO2 Emission Reductions
In a significant legal victory for Shell, a Dutch court in The Hague has overturned a previous ruling that mandated the oil giant to cut its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. The 2021 ruling had made Shell the first corporation compelled to undertake such drastic climate action. Shell argued that emissions reductions should be mandated by governments, not courts, and highlighted its goal of a 50% reduction by 2030. Environmental group Milieudefensie plans to appeal the ruling, which could influence similar lawsuits in the future.
