Significant Decrease in Restrictive Practices in Irish Mental Health Care

A report by the Mental Health Commission reveals that the use of restrictive practices in Irish mental health centres has decreased by nearly 50% over the past five years. This includes a drop in physical restraint from 6,747 in 2019 to 3,467 in the last year, alongside a reduction in seclusion episodes. Outgoing Minister for Mental Health Mary Butler praised the findings, highlighting a shift towards human rights-focused care. The report reflects changing societal attitudes and the impact of robust regulations in improving mental health services in Ireland.
