Spain’s Congress Eases Voting Restrictions for Citizens Abroad

The Spanish Congress has approved the removal of the ‘voto rogado’ system, which had required overseas voters to request ballots in advance since 2011. This change, aimed at enhancing participation among expatriates, is expected to take effect after summer. The original measure was introduced following allegations of electoral irregularities, leading to a significant drop in overseas voter turnout. Key political parties, including PP, PSOE, PNV, and Ciu, have now recognized the need for reform to facilitate easier voting for Spanish citizens living abroad.
