Study Reveals Sparrows Become Grumpier with Age

A recent study published in the Royal Society’s ‘Philosophical Transactions B’ suggests that sparrows tend to become less social as they age. Research conducted on Lundy Island tracked more than 615 house sparrows from birth to death, revealing a significant decrease in the average number of friends per bird over time. While early social interactions enhance survival and mating success during youth, older sparrows showed a decline in forming new relationships. Lead researcher Julia Schroeder notes that this pattern may also mirror human behavior, potentially contributing to loneliness in older individuals.
