Surge in Tick-Borne FSME Cases Highlights Low Vaccination Rates in Germany
Germany has reported a significant increase in Früh-Sommer-Meningoenzephalitis (FSME) cases, with 582 infections noted by the end of October, up 145 from last year. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) highlights that 99% of those infected were unvaccinated, with national vaccination rates in risk areas hovering around 19%. The disease, carried by ticks, poses risks mainly in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and parts of Hesse and Thuringia. The RKI emphasizes vaccination for individuals frequently outdoors or with potential tick exposure, while Lyme disease cases have also seen a slight rise this year.
