Switzerland Faces Pressure Over Russian Uranium in Nuclear Power Plants
The Swiss Federal Council is open to extending the life of existing nuclear power plants and exploring new ones, even as pressure mounts to shift away from Russian uranium sources. Two plants, Beznau and Leibstadt, currently use uranium from Russia, raising concerns amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Green National Councilor Sibel Arslan highlighted the ethical implications, linking uranium purchases to funding Russia’s actions in Ukraine. As contracts with Russian state-owned Rosatom are set to expire soon, discussions are underway for alternative suppliers, although exit penalties remain a concern for the energy provider Axpo.
