Switzerland to Enforce Face Veil Ban Starting 2025
Beginning January 1, 2025, Switzerland will implement a ban on wearing face coverings in public spaces, following a decision by the Federal Council. Violators may face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs, although the majority of penalties will start at 100 francs to minimize administrative burdens. The law, stemming from the 2021 ‘Yes to the Veil Prohibition’ initiative, includes exceptions for religious sites, cultural events, and health reasons. The legislation also targets masked individuals during protests and riots, while safeguarding rights related to freedom of expression.
